Direct sound over MDX, I also have a DLL i wrote for TV called GameSound.DLL check out Geonardo as well www.zepadev.net

FMOD is good, i should know - i work there. Cheesy

FMOD has a number of licencing options including free for free projects and cheap ($100US) for indie/hobbyist projects. It's used in heaps of AAA title and easy to use. I could go on but you guys can google it and make the judgement for yourselves.
