Express editions of Visual Studio are free for both private and commercial use.
If you need the more complex templates and tools, you only have to pay every 3 years or so for a new version or just get the upgrade for much less.

I do agree that it might take some time to learn the new syntax but with so many articles, tutorials, samples and blogs around it will make it a lot easier.

Download the Beta of VS2010 and see it it changes your mind...
