I'm having a hell of a time finding real imagery to use for a game.  I'm trying to map out New Zealand (its <1000 mile square, but only about 10% of that is land) as its a decent stand-alone island with varying terrain.  Anyway, I'm going through *tons* of NASA/USGS sites and just having a really hard time finding the data I want.  I've used up 5GB or so of space but don't seem to have the type of map at the proper resolution.

Aanybody have any websites where I can plug in something like 160E32S to 180E52S and have it give me a 10m/pixel resolution heightmap and satellite image of a location (I'd like land coverage as well, but beggers can't be choosers)?  I also want underwater but could live without it if I had to.  I don't really care about the format as they are all documented and I can write my own converter.  No JPGs tho, I seem to find lots of those which seem to be exactly what I need, except crappy jpg compression doesn't work when I'm going to be looking at each pixel for the terrain type.

There is like 100 different acronyms to use for these things, and I know what maybe 3-4 of those are.  I'm not a GIS person but have tinkered with em in the past, I just dont want to spend a month looking for some simple public domain satellite data Sad  Heck, even google goes down to 2m resolution for NZ so I *know* its out there.

Oh well, any pointers or websites ya'll know of?  I do have 1m DEM/Satellite imagery of a 60km box in southern california called NTC I'd be happy to trade you for (though if you can help you prolly don't need it!).

Before you suggest it, I've used every terrain generator on the planet, and they just don't produce very realistic terrain for more than a very small area, I want real life imagery.  Go to NZ from google maps and see for you self.

Thanks!

I've played with this a bit too.  Try seamless.usgs.gov.  It has a graphical interface to link you to everything available for a given region.

The problem with Google(and several other formats and/or sources) is that it's proprietary data.  I know that USGS has a 1 arcsecond (30m) worldwide map.  They also have 1/3 arcsec (10m) and 1/9 (1m) for the continental US.  All of these are available at that site.

I downloaded in BIL format and used AvisMap Free Viewer to convert to BMP.  Wikipedia has a lot of references for data types and viewers but like you found, they are confusing, proprietary, and the best ones are big $$$.  I suspect Google data is only extractable through their $400 professional package.

Hope this helps some.
