As you may have read in the Game Development forum (or elsewhere on the interwebs), TIGSource has been hosting a competition this month about video game "bootleg demakes". I decided to demake Geometry Wars with ASCII graphics, using C# and TV3D 6.5.

The result is called.... TROUBLE in EUCLIDEA.

And it's done!

Video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgBGzSghdVo&fmt=18

I've decided to open-source it. The code isn't commented and isn't that clean because I've spent little time making it (~12 days), but it's still nicely separated, and uses the component framework that I've built some time ago to emulate XNA's.

Download link : http://www.theinstructionlimit.com/other/TroubleInEuclidea/TroubleInEuclidea_r3.zip
Source code : http://www.theinstructionlimit.com/other/TroubleInEuclidea/TroubleInEuclidea_src_r3.zip

It's C# 3.5, so the project is a Visual Studio 2008 solution and it'll only run if you have the .NET 3.5 framework installed.

Check the readme file for controls and other details.

As a side note, there's a ton of awesome looking entries in the TIGSource forums, you should check them out and vote when the voting time begins, a week from now!

Love it Zak... I was actually just thinking about doing some remakes of my favourite Atari games, but a demake like that looks like a heap more fun!

A few years ago, I started remaking a donkey-kong style game in textmode, but doing it the way you have - with the particles and glow, etc... it's a true work of art!

Visually and audibly, this is the best geometry wars clone i have seen... although, you should have named it ASCII Wars Cheesy
Really though, incredibly brilliant design and execution.

This should be stickied. Games with source are rare around here. Smiley

That's funny, I saw someone who has made a textmode DK just days ago!

Didn't work on my machine. I got an access violation. However, I was able to fix the problem by going into the source and moving the Engine.Init before the Engine.SetDebugMode (directly after the Engine=New TVEngine).

That's really strange. Bug in the engine...?
What if you just remove the SetDebugMode call?

Well the next call after your SetDebugMode was the Engine.Init calls, so naturally, it worked when I removed the SetDebugmode because only call after that was the init.

What I'm not sure of is why it only happns on my machine.

Now that I remember, I had to remove the SetLicense call, it was messing up with TV init. I still haven't managed to get a working license btw.

My high score is 27035 or something ;( I suxxor ;(
