I'm having a hard time finding somebody to make a single model Sad  I have tried many times to make 3D stuff, 3DS/GMax/TS/Doga/etc but just can't find the talent within me Sad

I need a single model, nothing too complicated.  Well, I guess its kind of 2 models.  I need a somewhat high resolution version of a soldier in full body armor, then a smaller animated version of it (like an MDL/X/MD2/MD3/etc) so I can render it in an engine for demonstration purposes.  It needs up to 75 animations, but 30 of those are "getting hit" animations, and another 30 or super redundant like sit/walk/stand while looking f/r/l/b/etc, only 1-2 are actually somewhat complex.

I can pay for the services, but I'm just a sergeant in the army and I'll be hard pressed to come up with $100, so I guess it’s not too helpful Sad  I can get you a Tungsten penetrator for an M1A1 though Smiley .  If it’s a great model explosive requests may be considered (but most certainly denied!)

Anyway, this is NOT for a game, it’s for a simulation I'm making for the military.  I'll do the 3D engine part (it’s pretty simple really), but if your really good and want in on the action I'd be more then happy to let somebody else do it Smiley

I could also really use a webmaster, my web ability suck nearly as bad as my modeling abilities Sad

I would need some results rather quickly, I'm doing a proposal to DARPA and the US Army, that *could* result in quite a bit of R&D money, BUT, I need to be able to sell it, and all the power point and project data in the world doesn't sell nearly as good to military type as a cheesy 3D demonstration!

If you know anybody who could do the model or website I really need some help.  If you’re really patriotic and love your fellow American's it behooves you to help me, as if I had the funding I’m requesting 2 years ago, our losses in Iraq would have been less then 10% of what they actually are.  If your familiar with the objective warrior, land warrior, or future combat systems projects (FCS will be roughly $135B when “complete”) then you should easily be able to see where I’m going with this.

The technology is here today, the motivation is here today, the expertise is here today, but Boeing-SAIC won’t be here today for 15 more years.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, my unit is about do deploy to Iraq, and I would have to know a soldier that died when I (and you!) could have done something to save him or her.

Don’t mean to be so dramatic, but I’m serious on the capabilities of this project, and serious on the inability of the military to buy into it without some cheesy graphics 

Thanks,

Yep -- there are a lot of modeling resources out there that are relatively inexpensive.  Turbo Squid is one of my favorites and 3DRT is another.

I've been all over turbosquid, it's geat, except that a great deal of the stuff doesn't seem to be made for putting into games.  But it's definately got some inexpensive stuff that is really cool

I want to make a puzzle with like 40,000 pieces, and when it's done, it says "Go Outside"

Problem is, what I need does *not* currently exist.  I don't just need a soldier, I need one with an advanced suit of armor, which needs to be custom made based on certain capabilities.

Thanks for the input though, its a good set regardless!

Understood, however beggars can't be choosers as the saying goes   You are not going to find someone to do a custom model with 2 LODs and 75 animations for under a hundred dollars -- at least that has been my experience.  A custom rig starts in the $1,500 range; I’m not saying you can't find it cheaper it’s just unlikely.

I would suggest searching the art related communities if you are serious about getting it done -- you may find someone interested in the cause.

To start you may want to go here: http://www.military-meshes.com/

Wow, that just blows me away.  I mean, there are *thousands* of models people have made for free for quake, halflife, or any other 3D shooter.  There are a HUGE number of "mods" out there for just about every popular game.  There are *tons* of extremely talented modelers making models for *free* just to have everybody and their mother download it.

Why would a soldier wearing some new armor be so much of a request to make people not want to do it, when somebody will do a mesh of homer simpson for quake?

I guess I'm just not getting something.... maybe its the same thing I'm missing that disallows me from creating 3D models (though i can architect the largest networks, rebuild any system, program and even type 90 wpm).

And there is no way I can flip the bill for a $1500 model, but with a great model and thus a great cheesy movie, I could easily make a thousand times that, and thats being conservative.

sigh... I don't know what to do on this, granted I am desperate, if I use just some armored marine from some game, it'll look like hell and be obvious its not the product I'm pitching Sad

My advice:

Find a mesh that you like without animations and, in 3dsmax, apply a bip file (animation file) on it and tatata: instant movements! Wink. I have the bip file from RTCW somewhere! If you want I will send it to you, of simply search the web Smiley

Hope it helps,

Let me clear something up -- I'm not saying you can't find someone to do it for free.  I'm saying you are going to have to search for someone, which is why I gave you the link to start from.

My point was that if you were planning to pay someone to do it and not have to worry about cheesy art you should be prepared to pay -- the going rate for an experienced modeler is $40-60/hr.  You can find them cheaper but you have to acknowledge that you get what you pay for.

----

As for the people making mods  -- there is a distinct difference between building a free mod for a commercial game (using existing art) and building something that you intend to resell.  I'm not going to delve too far into the legalities here but in general you can’t resell derivatives of original work without permission.

---

Finally if what you are looking for is a custom texture you can simply buy one of the model packs and then go in search of a texture artist that can create you a new skin.  That route may be the quickest and cheapest for you.

Anyhow just my .2 cents -- best of luck.

you can also try at http://www.cgtalk.com or other sites like that .. there are mainly artists there and there is one or two forums specially for hire art[ists] ..
but I don't know the prices .. you can say what you want and how much you can pay and maybe some will respond .. worth a try ..
