Obtain mesh group name without losing texture info!

Hey Guys,
Have a nice day.
Was wondering whether it is possible to load a mesh into TV3D with Group and Texture information intact. Currently I am using .X files and the group names won't show up. When I export the model as .3DS from 3DS Max, the texture file information is lost. To convert to TVM a 3DS file is required.
I cannot store the group/texture information for models as the users would be able to add new models later.
What other alternative do I have? Your valuable suggestions are appreciated
Regards
