I've been following these guys' blog (Lugaru developers, now working on its sequel Overgrowth) for a while and they've posted this thing this morning about how they modified the triangulation of their terrain to fit the heightmap. It looks really cool, and even though it probably makes the landscape much less sculptable, it's very clear that it looks better and the geometry is more optimally distributed.

They have a ton of other cool stuff earlier on their blog, like their blood splatters... Shocked
