I have been looking around but I cant seem to find a description of exactly what an alpha map is...
While on this subject, what's a normal map?
Can anybody help?

Alpha maps are very useful.

Take a palm tree.

Base Texture:

Alpha Texture:

Rendered Output:


The alpha makes the black around the base texture transparent. So its not seen.

Alpha=Opacity

The alpha map is always greyscale (black and white).   Wink
