You don't have to, no.
you should never, ever, ever, have to pay to learn whether or not a particular solution fits your project. Big no, no, for me. Just no. If they charge to learn, then I dunno, that would concern me.
They don't charge to learn. One of the users made video tutorials and charges for them, in the same way that TV3D users write libraries or editors and sell them to the community. Several other users have made video tutorials and give them away. All of the learning resources from Unity Technologies themselves are free, and everything given away with them (eg: code, additional libraries, models, textures) are free (even for commercial use.)
