Blitz3d has been one of my all time favorite engine. Well its not really an engine but rather a development language itself, built on top of a 3D engine.
Although the engine itself is kinda outdated and based on an earlier version of DirectX, it is quite fast, versatile, has a very large community base that continues to do wonders with the engine.

This recent quick demo was made using tools that were built in Blitz3d.

The reason I'm moving from it is due to the fact that while Blitz3d is fast......it's not quite as fast as TV from what I hear (i'm still playing around with the engine). Also, TV supports C#.NET and runs perfectly without any problems. There are other engines that support .NET such as 3DState(not good...) and the open source Irrlict engine(.NET still buggy) but TV is the only stable one I know of so far and won't charge an arm or a leg.

i like b3d a lot Wink you do your suff faster as in tv3d as you dont have to struggle around with c++, c# syntax or so... but it wont be a reference for a later job "hey i did b3d!"... its good to do concepts. but it has a lot of missing features (blitzmax have them now, but bmax is not able to do dx yet so...)

but from those easy language in programming (darkbasic (hell WHAT A CRAP!), purebasic (not bad for applications... engine is often ogre)  its a great language and you can still use it as an advanced programmer. so i did a particle engine, a gui and that stuff with it. it was a lot of fun and i learned much.

when i changed to tv3d i missed the vertex access (and hope its better with 6.5)... but in everything else tv3d is better as you can use c#/c++/delphi/vb... which are (you could say) unlimited in their abilities and in the end faster Wink

-

btw... shouldnt it be possible to make tv3d available for bmax?

[EDIT] the picture above: this are tool by the community. they enable you to do things quicker / easier... BUT they often cost money! so... a base of 80$ + 3 Tools * 20$ = 140$... this is nearly a tv3d single license Smiley

I used blitz3D in the past, and I did some testing, before switching to TV, using the same models, and pretty much the same code, TV FPS was way higher than blitz and now with 65 its skyrocket high.
Blitz3D is stuck with DX7, maybe blitmax will improve performance, but it just came out, for Mac only and no 3D engine, so TV is way ahead.
One good thing about blitz its the number of tools and source-code available, but dont expect Mark Sibly to reply to your emails, like the dev team here!

as far as the web site is saying, only Mac OS X, (unless you're running an emulator), the PC version will come, but its not ready. And no 3D engine for now. (at least, no 'official' 3D engine, you have to make you own), The official one will come, but it's not ready either.

Once I get TV3D working I can help make a camparsion between Blitz3D/BlitzMax and TV3D. Here are some of the differences:
  • Both Blitz3D and BlitzMax are their own language. TV3D is not.
  • Blitz3D has a built-in 3D engine, BlitzMax has a 3D module comeing(also many a 3rd party module). And TV3D IS a 3D engine
  • Blitz3D uses DX7, the BlitzMax (offical) 3D Module will use DX9 (methinks.. maybe DX8?), TV3D uses DX8 or DX9.
  • Blitz3D and BlitzMax are Basic based, TV3D can be used on loads of programming platforms.

BlitzMax is nice though, at the company I work, we use it for quick prototypes.

I am unsure why someone would add a 3D engine within a 3D engine but it seems like this guy did it.

What others thought. (Warning: Fanboys, but what do you expect.)

Blitz3d is great for what it is.  Starting with B3D you can learn all about collisions, the game loop, movement, skybox...lots of basic stuff.  It runs fast, it is easy to use and now you can get a version that works with C# or VB.NET (with a little tweaking that is)

The downfall of Blitz is that it has not progressed past DX7.

So while it is perfect as a learning tool, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn 3d gaming from scratch, it is not a real development level engine.

I am an old time MMO player, so let me put it into terms that other MMO junkies will understand.  Blitz is the low level guild you hung around with until you started getting close to raid level, then you ditched them and found a bigger more active guild to play with.   Tongue

Well there are many, many times more commercial games written in B3D than TV, so if it's development-level enough for that many more commercial games, it must be doing something right Wink

soo true. i love blitz3d... it have a very nice entity class, and by it having its own ide , nice docs, and a huge online of code samples its makes the getting started alot quicker than tv3d.

hey guys isn't tv3d 6.x still have some kind of watermark licesnse polishy that states it cant be use for commercial purpose unless purchased?

maybe that could be why there are not as many titles under its belt. Huh

but i would go with tv6.5 all the way, as its keeping up with the future as it advances, but on the same note it keeps things nice and simple but effective.

No. Only 6.5 is closed beta. All previous versions are available for commercial use.

Yes, with a license...which is what he wrote.

Besides, most Tv3D-users do the same thing as id Software licensees...don't say what engine they use. As compared to Epic and Unreal Engine (3) that, iirc, wants each licensee to have the info visible that they use their engine.

You're right, I misread his comment about the license. Nevertheless, the same is true of Blitz3D, so he's still wrong that it explains a difference. You can't use Blitz3D even for non-commercial purposes without buying it.

You're probably also correct that most TV3D users don't advertise what engine they use, but neither do most Blitz3D users, so again, it doesn't explain any difference between the two.

There are just a lot more commercial Blitz3D projects than TV3D ones.
