If you haven't found this before, I suggest to have a look at this paper:

http://www.valvesoftware.com/publications/2007/SIGGRAPH2007_AlphaTestedMagnification.pdf

This could be the solution to many text-rendering issues with different resolutions.
I haven't played with this, but it doesn't sound too complicated. I plan on implementing this for the user interface I'm working on.
