World editor as in landscapes?

If so, check out L3DT. The free version is more than enough

But if you meant world editor as in level design and scene creation tool, then no. Only thing I can think of is PizzaYoYo's PlanetX editor, it ain't free but so good that it's well worth the 60 bucks.

6.5 does not support BSP, so you might be SOL on that one.

It also says it exports as a raw polygonal file, so it should be fine.

I have used a lot of free editors in the past including,

Deled:

Deled can import/export to multiple formats

Torque Constructor:

Constructor has a plug-in on the forum that will export to 3DS.

Radiant:

Radiant and most editors that export to MAP can then be imported into Torque Constructor and exported using the 3DS plugin.

Then when you look into commercial programs later on such as 3D World Studio, you can import the MAP file saved with most the other editors, better workflow.

Hi,

Aeon from this forum made a plug-in a while ago for 6.5 which makes the MAP format available for TV3D, i think it will work for 6.3 also, you would need to ask him or just test it.

Why do people prefer softimage over maya of 3smax, or vice versa?

It depends on everyone's taste I guess...

Well until just recently, it was a hell of a lot cheaper. The $600 version of Softimage had all you needed for game development, whereas 3dsMax is three and a half grand, but I gather that the entry level version of Softimage has been cancelled as of the next version, so it will probably wane.

EDIT: I had the price wrong. It was $600, not $500.
