Disappearing meshes

Anybody else have a problem with meshes just disappearing from landscapes ? I'm using 6.3 and Visual Basic 2005, trying to create an RPG. The mesh disappearance seems to happen at random but when it does, ALL meshes vanish simultaneously - billboards, loaded 3d meshes, and meshes created from TV3d primitives.
Actors and landscapes aren't affected.
Any clues out there as to why this is happening ?
