Hi all,

I don't know if it is a bug but it seems that all the .x models i export from maya are smooth shaded just like on the picture below ( left is imported into TV3D and right pic is taken from Maya )

I've tried to change every single options from the maya exporter to keep the "hard" vertices but nothing works. I've also tried to change the normal options directly into Maya but it has no effect.

If someone has any idea....

Maybe try to do a ComputeNormals on the model?

It's possible the compute normals function is what caused it. It also occurs when you use the Transform mesh function. What shading mode were you using in Maya? If you were using flat then everything in Maya would ofcourse appear flat. Actually its possible that in order for it to even be possible to have adjecent faces like that and still flat is to have duplicate verticies. So if the export doesn't support that then everything will be smoothed.

It does the same in Max (it doesn't take into account smoothing groups when fragmenting).

I wrote a small max script which will break faces into elements according to their smoothing groups, this will fix the problem entirely.

Ok, Now best of all :

Whatever I do in Maya, I get the same result when i import my model into TV3D.

While most of the faces on the model are smooth shaded, after a closer look i noticed that a few faces keep its hard edges. Huh

(even if i set every single normal to the face it belongs in the correct direction.)

The only option that seems to have a significant effect is “reverse normals” but it’s useless for my model.

JukkaKevät => i wish the same exists for Maya as it’s our main modeling program.
If you know about such script for Maya, please let me know.

Sorry I can't solve the problem but I can say I have same problems. Exporter seems like it's acting randomly hehe. Here's my report in bugtracker:

Quote
Argh, can't understand how it does things because it exports sometimes ok, sometimes not even though models are created the same way.
Mesh that has more materials on it almost never have exported groups and uv map.
Textures are never exported with materials.
Sometimes normals are exported with different smoothing factor (very rare).

Orl, before exporting try DeleteAllHistroy.

This is most likely because of a gap in the unwrap (if the unwrap isn't continous it will make a sharp edge there).

Hum here's a pic to illustrate :

I've tried to delete history but it has no effect...

JukkaKevät => as you suggested it could be a UV unwrap. I'll redo it all from the beginning and we'll see

OK some news :

I've tried a new exporter for Maya called cvxporter.
I've notice a lot of improvement, the model has now some hard edges BUT smooth edges still remains at random locations.

So as far as i know this means it comes from the exporter and not from Maya.

I'll lets you know if i finaly manage to find a solution

Looks like the only polygons being smoothed fall under 89.5 degrees threshhold... could that be it? It looks like that... Try finding that smoothing setting in Maya... or it might be 90.
